Teens
The Center’s Teen Program is extensive, serving youth 6th grade to 12th grade. Our year-round program encompasses everything from hanging out to hiking. We offer drop-in programming, a summer youth adventure program, middle school afterschool programming, and middle school summer programming.
Drop-In Programming
Drop-in teen programming is offered at the Sara Holbrook Center's New North End Youth Center (NNEYC). We provide a space for teens to be teens. Pool tables, foosball, basketball, air hockey, computers, art activities, and board games are all available and supervised by a supportive staff. On Fridays, a community outing is planned, such as swimming at the YMCA, or a night at the movies. Dance parties are held monthly to provide a safe, social activity.
Highlights of the drop-in program include special themed nights for High School participants. Monday night is strictly set aside for the Girl's Group. This creates a time and space for young ladies to explore self-esteem, healthy relationships, community citizenship, personal issues and a safe place to discuss some of the wonder and worry of growing up. On Thursday nights, youth participate in our Fire in the Kitchen program. Youth and staff meet up and cook nutritious meals together. We work on cooking skills, budgeting and trying new things!
Bob and Maggie Green Youth Adventure Program
During the summer months, the program takes on a new identity as the Bob and Maggie Green Youth Adventure program. We take advantage of the warm weather to go mountain biking, hiking, and swimming at area beaches and natural swimming holes. The goal is to help kids explore all that Vermont has to offer.
Middle School After School Programming
In collaboration with the Burlington School District, the New North End Youth Center coordinates the after-school programming at Lyman C. Hunt Middle School. Various mini-courses, such as yoga, photography, Thai cooking, geo-caching, designing fashions, and homework help are offered each session.
Summer Middle School Programming
During the summer, the NNEYC offers activities exclusively for middle schoolers. The summer program offers several courses, such as sailing, gardening, wood-working, fly-fishing, as well as a free lunch. The program typically operates for four to six weeks. Thanks to support from the Burlington School District, this summer camp is open to all middle school students throughout the city of Burlington.
